Part of the furniture

26-04-2020 - 269 comments

Sometimes we just look at it but most of the time we take it for granted, even though life would be pretty uncomfortable without it. The artistry of African furniture reminds us that there was a time before flat-packed or production-line items picked from a catalogue.

The sounds and rhythms of Africa can be heard in contemporary music worldwide. Handcrafted drums, rattles, shakers, xylophones and string instruments combine with African voices to create a rich and harmonious feast for the ears.

These canes are made for walking

18-01-2015

When you think ‘walking canes’ you probably think of elderly people (or possibly Fred Astaire), but did you know they can also be art? Over time, walking canes have been used as weapons, status symbols, fashion accessories and ceremonial accoutrements. But today, ornately carved African walking canes are proof of the fact that they’ve evolved from humble tools to an art form in their own right.

If bags are the ultimate accessory, then African bags are surely the ultimate way to get your Motherland mojo on. An animal print leather bag or a bright Madagascar basket will transform any outfit and you can even look great when you’re doing the shopping with a kikoy or khanga cotton shopping bag that’s better than a green bag in every possible way.

Like a kid with a timeless toy

02-11-2014

Every year there’s a different toy craze - some manufactured concoction that no child can possibly live without. While the number one selling plaything is different every Christmas, some toys remain timeless classics and these tend to be the ones with no branding or electronic components. The simplicity of handcrafted African and toys transcends trends, with a beautiful authenticity that sets them apart from mass-produced merchandise.

Bring it to the table

19-10-2014

MasterChef, My Kitchen Rules and The Block have taught us that presentation is everything and when it comes to interiors, this mantra holds true right down to the utensils on your dining table. Handcrafted tableware adds the final flourish to an African-inspired decor and once you’ve set the table it’s all about what you eat, how you eat it and most importantly, who you eat it with.

A bit of decorum please

13-09-2014

When it comes to interiors, an African motif is versatile and works equally well with clean modern lines or a rustic look. African interior design tends to incorporate neutral, earth tones combined with vibrant splashes of colour. Contemporary African decor is all about simplicity so don’t overcomplicate it when selecting from our collection of artworks and artefacts to enhance your home’s walls, surfaces and furnishings.

The Craft of a Culture

12-09-2014

What’s the difference between ‘art’ and ‘craft’? You could say that craft has a practical purpose and art is for looking at. With African art it can be a fine line, as artworks can have a practical purpose and handicrafts can hang on the wall. Just because something could be put to practical use doesn't mean it can’t be beautiful too.
