When writing about African fashion finds we said the easiest way to incorporate African fashion into your wardrobe is to accessorise, and we also promised you a bag blog. If bags are the ultimate accessory, then African bags are surely the ultimate way to get your Motherland mojo on.

It’s hard to go past our animal print leather bags for a quintessentially African motif but now that spring has well and truly sprung, we're loving the fresh and earthy colours of Madagascar baskets. Hand crafted in beautiful designs made out of reed, leather and fabric, they’ll always brighten up your day. These flexible baskets are equally perfect for the beach, a family picnic or a day out with the girls, with plenty of room for all the essentials.

Speaking of essentials, let’s talk shopping. Whether you’re popping into the supermarket or picking up some goodies at the delicatessen down the road, you need a shopping bag on your shoulder. Our cotton kikoy shopping bags come in a selection of beautiful bright colours and patterns that will make you feel much better about the humdrum of grocery shopping, and even men are happy to carry our cotton khanga shopping bags. What’s more, they’re made out of all-natural fabrics and textiles which means they not only look way cooler than a green bag, they’re also way better for the environment.

It's hard to remember life before green bags, but they've only been around in Australia since 2002. It’s fantastic that so many people have embraced them but the impact on global warming of a reusable ‘green’ polypropylene bag used only 52 times (or less) is actually worse than a single-use plastic shopping bag. Unless they’re used properly, over and over and over again, they create a false environmental economy as mountains of these non-biodegradable green bags pile up in landfill.

While of course bags serve a practical purpose, they’re also part of your outfit. True, women don’t have pockets which is often the rationale for needing a bag. And there’s always so much stuff to carry. But most women would still carry a bag even if they had more pockets and less stuff, because they just love bags and are happy for any excuse to buy another one.

The good news is you don’t need an excuse to buy one of our handcrafted African bags because these stunning creations in natural fibres won’t break the bank. The right bag can transform a good outfit into a great outfit and you’ll keep it for years because unlike clothes, bags always fit perfectly no matter what size or shape you are.
